Roll of Honour
On my mother's death
in 1982, I inherited a copy of a large book entitled "Roll of Honour
of the Empire's Heroes". It contains short biographies and reports of the
deaths of some 140 officers from WW1 and contains entries for three V.C.'s
all of whom have entries on Wikipedia but there is no reference to the Roll
of Honour as a source.
The Roll of Honour was published for private circulation at a cost of
£5 and five shillings for each copy and so there are unlikely to be
many copies around, especially as a number of the men came from overseas
and so their copies would have been sent to their families outside of the
U.K. However, the Imperial War Museum have confirmed that they have a copy
and have given me this reference: http://www.iwm.org.uk/collections/item/publication/119794
I have a copy because my mother's older brother Frederick Woodham Evans
was killed in WW1 and he is one of the 140 men who appear in the Roll of
Honour. See this picture of the book. Picture

Frederick Woodham Evans was the grandson of Edward Richard
Woodham who was one of the six hundred who fought at Balaclava. He was
commissioned as a second lieutenant into the 21st Middlesex Regiment and
died in action on the 26th May 1917 whilst attached to the Royal Flying
Corps. See short biography
and citation here.
